Her scholarship allowed her to take classes at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art when she completed her studies at Kenyon College. Janney's debut on TV came in 1999. She played C. J. Cregg in NBC's political drama The West Wing (from 1999 to 2006). She received the role four Primetime Emmy Awards for the role. Her role on The Showtime Drama Masters of Sex, Margaret Scully, Janney won the Primetime Emmy Award 2014 for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.
